Virginia's Governor Tim Kaine recently signed a bill adding the HPV vaccine to the list of required immunizations for school entry.
The bill will take effect in 2008, making the 2008-09 school year the first that girls would be required to receive the vaccine.

In March, retired Senator Beverly Hammerstrom, Director Emeritus of Women In Government's Board of Directors, and Sarah Wells, Associate Director of Women In Government, attended the First Global Summit on Cervical Cancer Prevention. The event was attended by approximately 450 participants from around the world including policymakers, celebrities, the medical community, and public health representatives. Senator Hammerstrom presented on the role of policymakers in creating political will for the prevention of cervical cancer and Ms. Wells spoke on the role of advocacy groups in educating policymakers and the public about this preventable disease.
